Who runs this site
TVShowFinder is a personal project run by Bart Nijland, who is responsible for how your data is handled. For any question about your privacy, email bartnijland91@gmail.com.
What we process, and why
- Your IP address. Like every website, our host receives it when you visit. We use it to work out which country you're in, so we show the streaming services, links and language that fit. We don't store it ourselves or link it to you. Our analytics tool briefly uses it, together with your browser type, to count unique visitors without cookies, and doesn't store it.
- Your quiz answers (mood, shows you loved, how long, your services). They're sent to our server to make recommendations, and the results may be cached for a few days so the same answers load faster. They aren't linked to you.
- Your watchlist and quiz progress. These are saved in your own browser (local and session storage). They never leave your device, and you can clear them anytime by clearing your browser's site data.
- Your language choice. If you pick a language, a small cookie (NEXT_LOCALE) remembers it for up to a year. It only exists to make that feature work, not to track you.
- Anonymous usage statistics. We use Umami, a privacy-friendly analytics tool without cookies, to see how the site is used: which pages are visited, how far people get in the quiz, and what they click (for example a trailer or a “Watch on …” button, and which show). This tells us what to improve. It doesn't use cookies, doesn't build a profile of you, and can't follow you across other websites.
We process this data because it's needed to run the site and give you the recommendations you ask for (our legitimate interest under the GDPR).
Who else is involved
To make the site work, we rely on these services. Some are based outside the EU, mainly in the United States.
Vercel
Hosts the website and works out your country from your IP address.
Their privacy policy →The Movie Database (TMDB)
Supplies show information; posters and logos load directly from their servers.
Their privacy policy →YouTube (Google)
Plays trailers, only after you click “Trailer”, via youtube-nocookie.com.
Their privacy policy →OpenRouter
Runs the AI that picks and explains recommendations. It receives your quiz answers, never your IP address.
Their privacy policy →Umami
Collects the anonymous usage statistics described above, without cookies.
Their privacy policy →
When you click a “Watch on …” button, you leave TVShowFinder and the streaming service's own privacy policy applies.
How long data is kept
We don't keep personal data ourselves. Our host keeps technical logs (which include IP addresses) for a limited period, according to its own policy. Cached recommendations expire after a few days. Data in your browser stays until you remove it.
Your rights
Under the GDPR you can ask what data we hold about you, have it corrected or deleted, and object to how it's used. Email bartnijland91@gmail.com and you'll get a reply as soon as possible. If you're not happy with the answer, you can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens) or the authority in your own country.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date at the top.
